What is an IPL treatment?
An IPL treatment is a type of light therapy used to treat wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, freckles, birthmarks, broken blood vessels on your face, rosacea, and other skin concerns. During the IPL treatment, a handheld intense pulsed light machine is used to penetrate the deeper layers of skin to eliminate sun damage. This is more beneficial than traditional laser treatments because IPL treatment’s light waves will not damage the top layers of your skin which will result in faster healing time. Although you can use IPL treatment anywhere on the body, it is most commonly used on the face.
What should I expect to happen during an IPL treatment?
You will be given protective eyewear. A cool gel is massaged onto the treatment area and then, your medical professional will apply light pulses from the IPL device directly onto the skin. The pulses might slightly sting the skin – similar to the feeling of the snap of a rubber band over the treatment area. This feeling subsides within seconds after treatment. Depending on the area being treated, the IPL treatment can take 20-30 minutes.
How does IPL treatment work?
In short, when your medical professional uses the IPL handheld device to target the desired areas, the wavelengths of light will heat up the dark or textured spots. Your body will then naturally break down the areas of imperfection. The imperfect skin cells will either flake off or the pigment will be carried away by your body leaving your skin looking flawlessly smooth and even in color.
Who can use IPL treatment?
Although IPL treatment can be used on any skin tone, it may not be as effective on people with tanned or darker toned skin. IPL treatment should not be used on pregnant women, people on blood thinners, people who have open areas or infections, or people who are actively taking Accutane.
