If you’ve ever Googled “what is a med spa” and wondered if it differs from a regular spa day, you’re not alone. That question makes complete sense. The med spa world can feel mysterious from the outside, and honestly, some of that mystery is the industry’s own fault. So let me clear it up.
I’m Julie Mizrahi, a Registered Nurse and the owner at Reimagine Beauty in Lancaster, PA. I am also one of our nurse injectors here. I built this practice because I believe deeply in what a med spa, when done right, can do for people. And part of doing it right is helping you understand exactly what you’re walking into.
What Is a Med Spa?
People ask me this all the time, and I love the question. Here’s how I think about it:
A med spa is similar to a spa in that we offer a lot of services that are pampering services, but we also offer a lot of medical procedures as well. Those are to help people look but also feel better. We have medical professionals who can prescribe medications and address wellness from within, and also skin health on the outside.
In other words: we’re not just here to help you relax for an hour (though we absolutely do that). We’re here to treat. Whether you’re dealing with hyperpigmentation, acne, volume loss, or just want to maintain healthy, glowing skin as you age, we bring a clinical lens to every single service we offer.
The Real Difference: Medical Oversight
Here’s something most people don’t realize: in Pennsylvania, to call yourself a med spa, you’re required by law to have a physician overseeing your practice. That means a licensed MD on board, and licensed healthcare professionals delivering the majority of your services.
At Reimagine Beauty, we take that seriously. Our team includes a medical director who oversees and approves all our recommended procedures, a Nurse Practitioner, and two Registered Nurses — myself included. That’s a level of clinical accountability you simply won’t find at a traditional day spa, where the requirement is certified estheticians and massage therapists, but not medical providers. Our Nurse Practitioner also oversees all of our patients who are on their weight loss journey.
A regular spa can give you a beautiful, relaxing experience — and there’s nothing wrong with that. But they can’t prescribe treatments, administer injectables, or safely perform advanced procedures like laser resurfacing or Morpheus8. We can. And we do, every day.
The Best of Both Worlds
What I’m most proud of at Reimagine Beauty is that you don’t have to choose between results and relaxation. We have licensed estheticians and massage therapists on our team alongside our medical providers. You can book a soothing massage, settle in for a luxurious facial, or explore a treatment plan for a skin concern that’s been bothering you for years — all in the same place, with a team that actively and intentionally collaborates and works as a team to provide you with complimentary services and support.
We focus a lot on overall wellness, but a lot of our facials feel spa-like at the same time we’re treating. Whether it’s dehydration, hyperpigmentation, or acne, you’re getting that pampering experience, but we’re also treating you as well.
It’s genuinely the best of both worlds. I know that sounds like a tagline, but I mean it literally!
Why Not Just Go to a Plastic Surgeon?
This one comes up a lot, and I think it’s important to address, because I understand the reasoning. If you want injectables, doesn’t it make sense to go to the most medically credentialed person in the room? Not necessarily.
There’s a huge misconception that people think if someone wants injectables, they should go to a plastic surgeon. But at Reimagine Beauty, we are doing these procedures every single day. We’re investing time and energy for our team into the continued education for these treatments. For a plastic surgeon’s office, injectables are not done very often, so it’s often not their priority.
Plastic surgeons are talented, skilled physicians — for surgery. Injectables like Botox and dermal fillers are an art form that requires constant practice, ongoing education, and a refined aesthetic eye.
At Reimagine Beauty, this is what we specialize in. It’s not a side service we offer occasionally. It’s a core part of what we do. And that distinction matters enormously when it comes to your results.
We Take the Time to Actually Know You
One of the things I insisted on building into our practice from day one is that every appointment has room to breathe. We intentionally schedule more time than we technically need because the conversation before the service is part of the care.
You can book a service with us, and by the time we actually get to the service, it could be completely different because of what we heard and are able to customize. We take the time to talk to every client before we ever begin.
Our team is small, close-knit, and highly collaborative. If you come in for a facial and mention something about your skin that one of our medical providers could address — we’re going to tell you.
We’re not going to let you leave without that information. And we’re not going to push you toward anything. We’re going to give you the knowledge and let you decide.
